Real wood, what else?

We shall try to help you in your selection with a few practical tips.

You may not know it yet, but there is a consortium for wooden products bearing the trademark VERO LEGNO, www.verolegno.it, which provides information to consumers, so that they will not confuse wood with other materials, and disseminates correct information on wood.

Always ask your retailer to give you a PRODUCT DATA SHEET, which must contain the information required by Law no. 26 of 10.4.1991 "Regulations on consumer information".

Read carefully the indications given in the product data sheet regarding the materials used.

If your retailer cannot provide a product data sheet, ask him to detail the constituent materials of the doors or windows in the purchase agreement.

Some of the doors or windows on the market are made of materials that reproduce the appearance of the various wood species, such as:

• Melamine paper: a printed sheet of paper impregnated with resin;
• Laminate or laminatine: printed plastic sheet;
• PVC: printed film made of synthetic material.

These materials have valid technical and quality characteristics, but they are artificial and differ in many respects from wood, which has always been a natural material. In the course of the centuries, processing methods have changed, and the design and construction of wood processing systems has become increasingly sophisticated, but the raw material continues to be the same.

The invention that has revolutionised the production methods of wooden doors, windows and furniture is the "slicer", a machine that since the early 19th century has been used to cut logs into very thin sheets. This paved the way for progress, as the ancient processing techniques applied exclusively to HEARTWOOD were gradually replaced with the use of wood veneer, or hollow core wood. Thanks to this simple but brilliant invention, wood consumption has been drastically reduced: a 1m2 block of solid wood 3cm thick can yield 50m2 of wood veneer!!
